Here are just some of my personal experiences with police.
City Police, 10,000 pop.—While working at my college dormitory staff desk, I was assaulted (fist strike to face & jaw). The police apprehended the subject and advised me to perform a citizen’s arrest and I did so. I was majoring in “Administration of Justice”, wanting to be a police officer. I somehow got to talk to the officers as they removed the handcuffed subject from the lobby to their squad cars. He started mouthing off to the cops, saying horrible things to them about their sexuality, their mothers, etc. As soon as they were in a secluded area (away from the lobby and out-of-view), they knocked this guy down into the sharp juniper bushes alongside the building and they ‘fell’ onto him with their full weighted knees and elbows causing him to scream in pain. They also got a few good punches in on his face and body. I stood there on the sidewalk in complete shock. He had thorns embedded in his face from the plants.
They said something to the effect “you going to continue talking sh*t?” “you got omething’ else to say?”
They picked him up and continued walking to the car and he started talking about reporting police brutality and started talking more sh*t about them, more deeply offensive commentary.
I looked at the 4-5 officers and questioned their behaviour and they all looked at each other and said “I didn’t see anythinig, did you?”
The guy kept mouthing off as they put him in the back seat and kept talking crap. As they put him in the back seat they looked around the parking lot, didn’t see anyone watching, and one cop got into the back seat and beat the living crap out of the guy until he was screaming for mercy (again).
Major Metropolitan PD—2am, walking along a completely desolate street, I crossed to the other side without using a crosswalk. I soon heard a motorcycle driving on the sidewalk behind me and I was shocked to turn and see a city cop pull up alongside me (on the sidewalk) and command me to stop. He proceeded to write me a citation for the offense. I asked him “you’re OK giving me a ticket when there are NO cars around and you drove your motorcycle on the sidewalk?”. He still gave me the ticket.
Highway Patrol? —I was driving a Ford Crown Victoria and pulling a small Uhaul trailer. I was pulled over and told that my taillights were not working. It was a complete lie as I’d just installed the hitch & wiring. I went to the back and they were working and the cop said “huh…”. It was in a interstate drug alley and I am sure he suspected I might be transporting drugs (unusual car/trailer combo).
Unknown Agency—I was pulled off the road (safely, legally) sleeping in my car when a nightshift cop lit me up and FI’d me (no legal reason at all). Asked me all kinds of questions.
Unknown PD—I was driving across country. It was 3am and I pulled into a Rest Area to quickly use the restroom and hit the road again. As I pulled up to the building there were approximately SIXTEEN ADA Handicap parking spots, covering the entire front area. They were all empty. I stupidly parked in one of them and went in. There wasn’t a soul around. As I walked out the door, a cop stopped me and asked if that was my truck. He proceeded to give me a $325.00 ticket for parking in ADA without a placard… at 3am… when the whole place was empty… REVENUE. It’s all about $
State PD—I was pulled over by a State policeman for ‘changing lanes without signaling’ but I had signaled twice before trying to get around a troublesome vehicle. Luckily when he told me why he’d pulled me over I said “do you mean the third lane change I made after trying to get around the black Suburban back there?” He knew he’d lose this one in court so he let me go.
City Police, 100K pop. —Our daughter was rear-ended by a 17 yr old whom then ran. A Good Samaritan followed the subject, got the license place, and returned to see that she was OK and give her the info. I asked our daughter if she got a police report, etc. When she said no, I contacted the local PD and asked for information. This was a Class C Felony with injuries and property damage and the police DID NOTHING. They stated “we went to the subject’s house and spoke to her. She’s a new driver, 17, and was scared.” AND? “And nothing. The officers have discretion and they chose not to arrest or cite.”
No. I wrote a letter to the chief of police and she had a lieutenant contact me stating that this was incorrect but it was now too late to do anything.
Same City Police, 100K pop. --At work one day, we saw on our security camera a guy climbing up on top of one of our storage containers. This is inside of our barbed-wire fenced in property (with cameras and vehicle patrols). We called the non-emergency 911 as we watched him sweating and obviously hiding from someone. He had a large knife on his hip. He was laying as flat as possible, trying not to be seen. The 911 operator took our info and we drove out there to see the police hopefully catch him. As we pulled up, we saw two cops (one with massive tattoos covering his arms, very unprofessional) walking with the guy, laughing. He was not cuffed, there was a K9 dog handler not too far behind. I introduced myself and asked them what was going on. They didn’t answer specifically but continued to behave jokingly. I asked again why the gentleman was not handcuffed and if they had indeed caught him on top of our storage shelter. They looked at me stupefied and I added that we had called non-emergency 911 because we saw him up there. The cop IMMEDIATELY radioed dispatch to disregard the call and stated to me that they were doing some K9 training, that this male was a cadet. They were surprised that we had cameras out there! I said “this is private property, you know?”… unbelievably unprofessional.
